The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), founded in 1901, has contributed to or has had a significant impact in areas such as smoke detectors, X-ray standards for mammography and pollution control technology as well as many more. NIST’s 207 acre campus in Boulder, Colorado is best known for serving as the source of official time for the nation by housing NIST-F1- an atomic clock- and is visited by upwards of 100 researchers each year.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) rich history dates back to 1807, with the establishment of the Nation’s first scientific agency, the Survey of the Coast. The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) began its Boulder, Colorado venture in 1960. NCAR is committed to research, education and service in the atmospheric and related sciences.
